Two Shields Investments (AIM:TSI) FOLLOW said its portfolio technology company, BrandShield, has launched a software product in an effort to protect political campaigns from online threats.

Its ElectionShield product will offer political candidates with the tools to monitor, detect and takedown online threats through an AI-based technology and online threat hunters team which utilises the BrandShield platform.

Specifically, this will target the growing range of online threats from social impersonation and fake social media content to fraudulent fundraising and domain squatting.

The last few years have seen a proliferation of fake social media content, in some cases using ‘deep fake’ video designed to attack politicians, the company explained.

In May 2018, Republican senator Marco Rubio warned against deep fakes that could be used in “the next wave of attacks against America and western democracies”, the Guardian reported.

The product will be introduced next week at a leading cybersecurity event, the RSA Conference in San Francisco, the statement detailed.

Shares in Two Shields Investments were trading 10.53% higher at 0.105p during Friday trading.

The launch comes at a critical time of preparation for potential misinformation on social media platforms ahead of the 2020 US presidential election.

On Thursday, questions were raised over whether a video posted by US presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg would violate the deep fake policies of Twitter and Facebook, the Verge reported.

The divide comes after Twitter announced earlier this week new policy that will not allow users to “deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm.”

The 2020 US Election is anticipated to see a total $1.6 billion spent on digital video, highlighting the importance of digital engagement between voters and their audience.

"Good campaigns that communicate with voters are central to well-run elections and referendums," said Yoav Keren, Chief Executive of BrandShield.

He added, “Having been a political campaigner myself, I know how important it is to ensure this faith is maintained. I am delighted that we have been able to utilize BrandShield's proven technology in the political arena.”
