Structural strength Keywords Studios Keywords Studios looks structurally well placed to continue performing well in an industry where change and innovation are the norm. The company again showed the resilience of its model in FY18, delivering 10.1% l-f-l revenue growth and 53% adjusted EPS growth in the face of considerable industry turbulence. Looking ahead, we see sustained growth from the launch of streaming services by industry majors and the continued shift towards outsourcing. Keywords’ strategy, which has delivered a five-year EPS CAGR of 53%, appears sustainable. As such, we believe that the shares remain set for continued appreciation. Analysts Dan Ridsdale Richard Williamson

Keywords Studios’ (KWS) revenues rose 66 per cent to €251m during 2018, and were up 10.1 per cent on a like-for-like basis, or 14.9 per cent “without the expected drag in the year from the VMC acquisition”. VMC has now been integrated across four service lines and five studio locations ahead of schedule. Like-for-like growth was also impacted by the ‘Fortnite effect’ – denoting the disruption caused to other games supported by Keywords by the success of the ‘Fortnite’ game. Still, six out of the group’s seven service lines enjoyed a strong underlying performance. Localisation testing was the exception; some projects expected at the end of last year were delayed into 2019. Overall, the first quarter of the current year was in line with bosses’ expectations. Recommendation under review.
Keywords Studios, which provides technical services to the global video games industry, has announced a 65% increase in full-year adjusted pre-tax profits to €37.9m on revenues 66% higher at €251m. Chief executive Andrew Day says the “phenomenally successful” free-to-play game Fortnite, which attracted 200 million players during the year, disrupted some games supported by Keywords. This led some clients to reduce their spending, terminate games or cease trading, but he believes the market is “more settled now,” with Fortnite and other new games having become an “integral part of it”. Keywords also now undertakes a “considerable amount of work” on Fortnite.

Keywords Studios: Opportunities in industry turbulence Keywords’ recent trading update indicated that the company continues to perform robustly despite industry turbulence. The acquisition of GetSocial, a cloud marketing services platform, for an undisclosed sum highlights the potential for Keywords’ M&A strategy to benefit from the weaker funding environment. We adjust our estimates to reflect slightly greater investment of profit back into the business in FY19 (EPS -3%), while adjusting working capital and deferred consideration payments upwards. We retain our view that Keywords remains strongly positioned, with an undemanding rating given the company’s leading market position, track record and potential. Shares in Keywords Studios (KWS) were up by around 6 per cent this morning, following declines last week which culminated in a more-than 10 per cent fall on Friday. These falls may have stemmed from – or been exacerbated by – a third-quarter trading update from US-listed games company Electronic Arts last Tuesday. Electronic Arts (US:EA) reduced its net revenue expectations for the full-year to $4.88bn, down from earlier expectations of $5.15bn. EA cited “intense competition” and “transformational change” in the video games industry. The FT cited “the likes of Fortnite” as “stiff competition”. Keywords counts EA as one of the prominent games companies that it provides services to. For now, we retain our (high-risk, long-term) buy recommendation.
