Royal Bank of Scotland said it will need to set aside an extra £600 to £900m in the third quarter, after a surge in PPI claims in the lead up to the August deadline. Up to June 30, the bank had made £5.3bn worth of provisions for PPI claims, of which it says £4.9bn had been utilised. RBS said the processing of claims is ongoing and the ultimate provision could be above or below the range.
Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS.L) Announced an update in respect of charges related to Payment Protection Insurance (PPI), that the company has been implementing the FCA's policy statement for handling complaints about the misselling of PPI since 2011. Under the FCA's Policy Statement 10/12, the deadline for filing complaints related to the mis-selling of PPI expired on 29 August 2019. To 30 June 2019, the company made provisions totalling £5.3 billion for PPI claims of which £4.9 billion had been utilised. Also, the volume of claims received during August was significantly higher than expected, with a further spike in the final days leading up to the deadline of 29 August 2019. The company therefore now expects to make an incremental charge for PPI claims, in addition to the provisions recorded to 30 June 2019, in the range of £600 million to £900 million in its Q3 2019 results, which takes into account claims by the Official Receiver. The processing of claims is ongoing and the ultimate provision recognised could be above or below this range.

Royal Bank of Scotland is planning to return £1.7bn to shareholders via an interim dividend of 2p and a special dividend of 12p. The Government-backed lender reported a 48% jump in pre-tax operating profit for the half year to £2.7bn and a return on tangible equity of 12.1%, boosted by the sale of its stake in Saudi bank Alawwal. While the profit result beat analyst expectations, RBS said economic and political uncertainty made it “very unlikely” that they will achieve their target return on tangible equity of more than 12%, or their cost to income ratio of less than 50%, in 2020.
Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS.L) Announced, in its interim results for the period ending 30 June 2019, that its net interest income stood at £4.00 billion, compared to £4.33 billion in the preceding year.
