GreenRoc (GROC Follow | GROC), a Greenland-focused explorer, announced results of purification test work on spheronised graphite from its flagship Amitsoq project in Greenland. Results showed 99.97% purity using alkaline purification, exceeding the purity required for EV battery anodes. The test work was carried out by GreenRoc's technical consultants ProGraphite.

The company also reported that a series of "positive and successful" meetings had taken place in Greenland between its CEO Stefan Bernstein and a number of project stakeholders, including local community members, the Minister for Mineral Resources and Justice, and the newly established government body NunaGreen, which is in charge of the carbon-neutral energy transition in Greenland.

GreenRoc also provided a status update on ongoing test work and resource assessment at Thule Black Sands. GreenRoc said coarser grain fraction (>1mm) from TBS drill samples would be tested for ilmenite content prior to finalisation of assays and resource assessment. Grains larger than 1mm were initially discarded from analytical work while potentially containing appreciable amounts of ilmenite. Testing of the larger samples is expected to commence by end of January 2023.

Today's news confirms that graphite from Amitsoq can be purified to exceed the 99.95% requirement for EV battery anodes. The news is not surprising, given GreenRoc's technical work had already largely confirmed this, but it is nevertheless an important milestone as the project readies to supply a significant percentage of the world's EV-grade graphite.

Indeed, GreenRoc's flagship Amitsoq asset is confirmed as one of the highest-grade graphite deposits in the world, with a maiden JORC resource of 8.28Mt ore at an average grade of 19.75% graphite. This maiden resource is expected to be upgraded significantly in the coming weeks, following GreenRoc's successful summer 2022 drilling campaign.

CEO Bernstein's successful meetings with local leaders, government representatives, and stakeholders further derisked Amitsoq. The project is expected to improve the local economy of Nanortalik and the Municipality of Kujalleq significantly, hence the positive feedback received by the CEO this week from local leaders. The Minister for Mineral Resources has specifically endorsed the Amitsoq project, and GreenRoc is engaged in work ensuring carbon-neutral operations at Amitsoq per Greenland's new national policy.

In a broader context, demand for graphite is forecast to soar. UBS is estimating a natural graphite deficit of 3.7Mt by 2030, representing around 37% of the total global market. And according to Baker Steel, between 2020 and 2040, a 22-fold increase in graphite for energy technology demand is forecast, and a 10-fold increase across all applications, an increase second only to lithium.

With global demand for graphite expected to soar, Amitsoq's vast deposit is set to play a key role in the transition to net zero.
