Intelligent Ultrasound (AIM: MED) FOLLOW, the artificial intelligence (“AI”) based ultrasound software and simulation company, has confirmed GE is the partner it has been working with over the past year to commercialise its AI technology with GE launching its Voluson SWIFT device today.

The GE Voluson SWIFT features SonoLyst, which leverages two applications powered by Intelligent Ultrasound's technology, SonoLystIR and SonoLystX:

  1. SonoLystIR performs automated detection of the key scanning views and automated selection of the relevant measurement tools, to speed up ultrasound procedures
  2. SonoLystX is a virtual on-board ultrasound expert that uses AI to compare the acquired image to standardised criteria to ensure scans meet stringent compliance protocols improving the quality assurance of ultrasound procedures

When deployed in private healthcare settings, increasing the speed of ultrasound procedures whilst ensuring correct quality levels are consistently achieved, can directly result in increased revenue for the operator and therefore provides GE with a compelling sales proposition against its competitors.

Roland Rott, General Manager of Women's Health Ultrasound at GE Healthcare, said: "Voluson SWIFT has redefined one of the most essential tools obstetrics and gynaecology clinicians rely on, delivering a contemporary design, intuitive user interface, and intelligent workflow supported by AI. In today's environment where cleanliness and time saving opportunities are critical for clinicians, we're proud to offer a solution that makes our customers' work easier and gives them time back with their patients."

SonoLyst is the first AI software to be launched under the Group's long-term license and co-development agreement with GE first announced in July 2019. The first royalty per unit revenues for Intelligent Ultrasound are expected at the start of 2021.

Prof Aris Papageorghiou, Professor of Fetal Medicine, St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, London said: “I have worked in the field of AI in ultrasound for over ten years, yet I am still amazed at the level of accuracy that has been achieved. You can really see how Intelligent Ultrasound's AI technology, incorporated in the SonoLyst software, will improve efficiency, make the learning of ultrasound easier and reduce omissions and errors. It's a big advance for ultrasound imaging in women's health."

Shares in MED have performed exceptionally strongly over the past three months from 11.5p in July to trade up 14% to 16.25p in the morning market following the announcement.

Stuart Gall, CEO of Intelligent Ultrasound, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with GE over the last year to bring this new AI technology to market. The new Voluson SWIFT ultrasound system uses radical innovations such as SonoLyst to bring new levels of efficiency to obstetric ultrasound scanning. We are excited about our continuing collaboration to bring the latest AI solutions to the market and wish GE Healthcare every success with what we think is the future of ultrasound scanning in women's healthcare."
